“Carey Marx Scoundrel”
Carey Marx is a scoundrel, a rascal and very occasionally a rogue. But he is never a fraud. Well, not anymore.
Carey was a medium, an above average medium! His methods consisted of lying. It’s not like anyone can check with their dead dad.
Yes, it’s so easy to speak on behalf of dead people. Just ask your grandmother. She agrees. Oh, and she loves you, by the way. Here is a true story of a formative moment, and of exploitation by someone who now knows better. Here is a moral tale about not getting caught. Here is an account of lying too well and going too far.
Carey Marx, won the award for Best International Show at the New Zealand Comedy Festival 2009, and returned with two shows in 2010, both of which sold out. The New Zealand Herald described him as ‘inspired and mischievous’ with ‘a devilish glint in his eye’, and as ‘a comic genius’
This is Carey at his most responsible revisiting himself at his most deplorable, exposing some tricks of his old trade and, finally, admitting that it’s just not nice to con people using confidential information, emotional manipulation, and accurate guesswork.
‘Rambling and mischievous, he’s a bit like Peter Pan’s evil twin’ – New Zealand Herald.
‘A genius for the unexpected and hilarious left turns’ – Guardian.
‘An old-fashioned comic-book schoolboy… cheeky charm and powerful punchlines’ – Chortle ****.
‘An extraordinarily talented stand-up’ – Metro ****
‘Childish and razor sharp joy … Utterly Brilliant’ – Skinny ****
‘Rare insight and intelligence’ – Herald *****

An outstanding opportunity to hear Guildford-born jazz saxophonist Iain Ballamy, recognised internationally as an outstanding and original musician and is one of the UK’s most widely acclaimed saxophonists and jazz composers.
His work is eclectic, contemporary and un-encumbered by formality and tradition. Transcending musical genres and forging strong and ongoing relationships with musicians around the globe, notably Scandinavia, Iain has worked with many of the cutting-edge figures of today’s contemporary Jazz scene.
The group Food which he co-formed with drummer, composer and electronics wizard Thomas Stronen is now signed to ECM records. They celebrated their seventh release in November 2012, featuring Christian Fennesz, Nils Petter Molvaer, Eivind Aarset and Prakash Sontakke.
Ballamy leads the Anorak quartet featuring Gareth Williams on piano and continues to tour and record with the virtuoso Norwegian button accordionist Stian Carstensen as a duo known as The Little Radio.
The trio Quercus, which Ballamy co-leads with pianist Huw Warren, features the legendary folk singer June Tabor. Quercus will release their first CD for ECM in March 2013.
Highlights of a career spanning nearly 30 years include working with Loose Tubes, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, Hermeto Pascoal, Django Bates, Kenny Werner, Gil Evans, George Coleman, The Karnataka college of percussion, John Taylor, Ian Shaw, Claire Martin, The Britten Sinfonia, Gay Dad, Everything but the Girl, Guy Chambers, Mike Gibbs, Carla Bley, John Dankworth, and many more.
Ballamy is a consultant tutor at The Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.
“Intensly melodic, eventful and full of surprises… The beauty of tone that Iain Ballamy gets is certainly one of the joys of the current scene, and his concern with creating it echoes Stan Getz’s.” Andy Hamilton, Jazz on CD
