With a fine balance between exciting arrangements and fiery solos, the Redtenbacher’s Funkestra never fails to entertain their audience with their feel-good, high-energy and original hybrid of Funk, Soul and Jazz, interjected with a good dose of humor and fun.
A characteristic and popular trademark of the band is their obvious enjoyment of on-stage performing and Stefan Redtenbacher’s banter, where he delights the crowd with amusing tales of the inner workings of the band and stories about the conception of their tunes.
Established in 2005, this multinational band is the creative brainchild of bassist and bandleader Stefan Redtenbacher who is currently mixing the material for their fifth album ‘The Cooker’ which is due later this year.
Alongside the core sextet, featuring Jim Hunt on tenor saxophone and Sid Gauld on trumpet, their records additionaly feature Funk legends like trombonist Fred Wesley (James Brown, Parliament), baritone saxophonist Stephen ‘Doc’ Kupka, trumpeter Lee Thornburg, tenor sax player Lenny Pickett (Tower of Power), guitarists Elliott Randall (Steely Dan) and Eric Krasno (Soulive/Lettuce) as well as the finest horn sections from the vibrant London Jazz Funk scene (Incognito, Brand New Heavies) and Michael B. Nelson’s ‘Hornheads’ (Prince).
For special occasions and festival gigs the band performs as ‘Redtenbacher’s Funkestra Mini Big Band’ plus a featured vocalist. This 10 piece line up with a 5 piece horn section is known to exude some serious energy that causes walls to shake and people to sweat and dance!

“One of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, Martin Shaw is a man in demand for both live performances and studio dates. And although numbering the likes of Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Blue Mitchell, and Miles Davis as his influences, he’s equally at home playing trumpet and flugelhorn in a pop or classical setting.
Martin was born into a family of musicians, both his mother and father being accomplished pianists. He began piano lessons at the age of 9 and started studying the trumpet at the age of 11. Four years later Martin became a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and went on to study classical trumpet and Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating with a GRSM Hons degree and an LRAM. In 1989 Martin was invited to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, before returning to London to finish his studies at the Guildhall School of Music with a postgraduate course in jazz and studio music.
The University of Central England in Martin’s native Birmingham appointed him professor of Jazz Trumpet in 2001 and he continues to tutor the next generation of would-be trumpeters, playing and touring extensively in his own right as well as working with many leading jazz artists including Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Pete King, Dick Morrisey, Steve Waterman, Tim Garland and numerous big bands including the BBC Big Band, currently led by trombonist Jiggs Whigham.
Along with session and T.V. work Martin still finds time to perform with classical ensembles and in West End shows and has also recorded, performed live and toured extensively with various pop artists including Sting, Jamiroquai, Natalie Cole, Jools Holland, Gorillaz, Paul Young and the Brand New Heavies.
Martin is joined at the Cavern by John Elliott on piano, David Ingamells on drums, and resident bass player Marianne Windham.”

The Andy Drudy Disorder takes the time-honoured traditions of guitar-based blues, mangling and twisting the form into a modern context, with a contemporary urban undercurrent. The music takes the best of each, and renders a powerful mix of time-warped sonic that drags the idiom into the 21st Century. The grit in the voice, the pungent hooks and earthy narratives punctuated by smart guitar, demand repeated listens and a fresh bottle of bourbon.
Distilled through years of gigging and recording, The Disorder produce a blues encounter unlike any other.
The Andy Drudy Disorder has come to town bringing a new take, a new attitude… and a deviant sting in the tale. The gutters fill with rain, the whiskey flows like wine, and the story of The Blues Civilization rolls ever on.
Blues Community
The band started out last Summer playing the Berkshire music scene as Bluesround. They came together from a musos wanted advert by harmonica player, Gary Lucas, along with Trevor on drums, (with Mel as drum dep). Gary’s recently branched away and started a new project.
So under the experimental title, Blues Community, you’ll see three artists, passionate about blues music : Len Surtees on Vocals and bass, harp, James Milburn, guitars and Mel Kleyn, drums.
Len Surtees, has toured extensively in the 80s with Nashville Teens, who had a hit in the 60s with Tobacco Road. He played bass on Peter Green’s Katmandu project. He also works with an original songwriter, Gary Roberts in Spinout.
James Milburn, a talented ex- Institute guitar student, enjoys collaborating with other blues fanatics. He plays around the Berkshire scene and has a few projects cooking.
Mel Kleyn, ex ACM music performance student, also plays in a function band, Encore. Mel briefly, appeared last Autumn, with Len. in Spinout with violinist Alexandra HIll, for Beatles Week in Liverpool, which took in venues such as the Philharmonic hall.

Richard Digance is known as one of the great folk entertainers of the 70s and 80s. His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. He has supported Steve Martin in the USA, Robin Williams at The London Palladium and is included in The Virgin Anthology of Songwriters for his important contribution to British comedy songwriting. When presented with the Gold Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters he was described as someone who for half a century has travelled the world with just a guitar and an immense collection of stories gathered through his own experiences. That kind of says it all.
As a poet Richard’s works are included in The Oxford University Press anthology of British Poetry, used in the Feardon Teaching Aids publications in the United States and as English Literature syllabus material in British Columbia, Canada.
He has survived all trends with his two and a half hour one-man show, his summer festival appearances in the UK, the United States, Canada and Dubai, his cruise work and television appearances. He is both an accomplished musician, rated by many as one of Britain’s greatest acoustic guitarists, inspired by his good friend Ralph McTell, and an entertainer who many younger comedians claim as one of their major influences. Garry Bushell, in The Sunday People, listed Richard Digance as one of the Magnificent Seven of British Comedy along with the likes of Tommy Cooper and Bob Monkhouse, a wonderful tribute indeed. On his own ITV Saturday-night show Richard has played guitar with Queen’s Brian May, The Moody Blues, Status Quo, Chris deBurgh, Juan Martin, Marc Cohn and Elkie Brooks.
Richard Digance gained a BAFTA Nomination for TV Entertainer Of The Year in the late 1980s and in 2003 received the Gold Award from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters for his services to live music. He is one of Britain’s top comedy and music attractions, a rare performer in that he’s respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished acoustic guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed Richard since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs. He is listed in the Virgin Encyclopedia of Music and his poems are used as teaching aids by Fearon Publications in the USA and by The University of British Columbia in Canada. In recent years he built a further following through his regular appearances on Channel 4s Countdown.
However, Richard Digance does not rest on his immense reputation. In the last two years he has broadened his appeal, firstly by proving to be one of Britains most sought after cruise entertainers and secondly by returning to his musical roots through major festival appearances. He has worked with a multitude of world-class artists; Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, Elton John, Steeleye Span, David Essex, Jim Davidson, Supertramp, Elkie Brooks and Tom Jones. His TV specials for ITV ran for a record 11 years and on these shows he played guitar with Brian May, Status Quo, The Moody Blues, Buffy St Marie, Juan Martin, Marc Cohn who wrote Walking in Memphis and Chris de Burgh on his way to being a major artist in his own right.

This instrumental 6 piece, London-based ensemble is led by Austrian bassist Stefan Redtenbacher who draws his inspiration from Jazz, Funk and Soul. He has forged his own brand of Funk without conforming to any trends – ranging from P-Funk, to JB’s to Funk Fusion and the funky sounds of New Orleans.
The band was formed in 2005 with one of Britain’s most exciting tenor sax players, Jim Hunt and expanded to a six piece a few years later by adding Sid Gauld, Incognito’s trumpet player, to the regular line up. For the past 7 years they have performed on a regular basis at the long established 606 Jazz Club in London as well as numerous venues in the South-East of England in addition to British and European Festivals.
Their records feature the core sextet enhanced by the best of British Jazz Funk musicians as well as superstar legends like Lenny Pickett (Tower of Power) and Fred Wesley (James Brown, Parliament) to name just two.
Their live shows are highly entertaining, at times intense, peppered with instrumental deftness but always with a sense of fun and humour, customarily guaranteeing ‘a good night out.’
‘Stefan, you know what the funk is about.’ Fred Wesley
‘Stefan Redtenbacher’s CDs are out-and-out spectacular funk.’ Snowboy

A fervent pop child of the 70′s who turned to jazz in the Noughties, Zena is inspired as much by Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Lewis Taylor and Eva Cassidy as by jazz greats like Anita O’Day. From a lifelong passion for soul and R&B that characterises her delivery, funky arrangements, Zena has featured on the London & South East jazz scene ever since Campbell Burnap unexpectedly played her demo of Comes Love on Jazz FM in 2003.Zena was born near Bath and lived there until studying Linguistics, German & Russian at Surrey University and in Europe. Zena’s funky jazz quintet played Brecon Jazz Festival in 2008 and will play Burton Agnes and Milton Abbey music festivals in 2012.
“She’s very very good live indeed …you’ll have a marvellous time!”
Bob Sinfield, “Jazz FM” Dinner Jazz show, January 2012“A warm, engaging personality on stage and an infectious sense of enjoyment that is really captivating….No histrionics, just heartfelt emotion. Her choice of material was almost impeccable ,with Joe Sherman’s That Sunday, That Summer and Stevie Wonder’s I Can Only Be Me two of the most touching things that I have heard in months. Her treatment of Human Nature, fast becoming a crossover favourite was just gorgeous. Zena has been getting a good radio response to the new album and on this showing, thoroughly deserves it.”
Brian Blain, LondonJazz – 2011
“Soulful unpretentiousness and solid musicianship. Captivated reminds us of the persistent appeal of the blues and gospel roots of jazz. Very few jazz followers could argue soundly with the outcome or James’s ever persuasive voice. Creative and compelling….she is an exceptional talent.”

“Intense, passionate vocals and a clear grasp of how to write a great song – mesmerising….”
Pete Christie has been compared to many acclaimed musicians from Martin Simpson to Paul Weller, and was recently described as being “a cross between Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson, but with a great voice; though, until now, without the fame !!!”
Pete Christie has developed his own original powerful style of acoustic fingerstyle guitar technique. His songs are original and contemporised anglicana roots, with a mix of rock, folk and country. His individualistic fingerstyle guitar technique can coax anything from achingly beautiful simple, sparse, and haunting accompaniment, to an explosive, almost neo-flamenco rhythm. It’s as if Pete “duets” with the guitar rather than just casually strums it, and he has perfected the art of making it sound like there has got to be more than just one musician on stage.
Over his 40 years as a performing musician, Pete has been frontman in a three-piece rock band, a professional songwriter, a recording sessions singer, and has been a guest with a diverse array of guitarists and musicians such as:
Jackie Leven, Nick Harper, Jeff Lang, Glenn Tillbrook, Ezio, Ruby Turner, Hugh Cornwell, Bob Brozman, Martin Harley, Matt Andersen, Ben Montague, Kieran Halpin, Steve Tilston, Rory Ellis, Dave Pegg, and frequently with Derrin Nauendorf.
Pete is based on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset in southern UK and is touring with his latest studio album ‘Frank’, which shows off his gift for tethering his romantic ruminations to memorable melodies and instrumental harmonies. The album has been called “refreshing”, “honest”, “wonderful”, “natural”, “versatile”, “…heartfelt songs that recall McTell’s glory days…”, and “delivered by a master craftsman”. “Frank is not background music. It’s a wonderfully written book brought to life by sounds”.
“Waiting in the Wings” one of Pete’s most frequently requested songs, is, according to Minor 7th in the USA: ”….reminiscent of the off-the-wall stuff of Brian Wilson and Sir Paul as produced by Sir George Martin.”
In 2011, Pete joined forces with the UK Roots Movement alongside Wille and the Bandits, Alex Roberts, Rory Ellis, Andy Grant, The Wishbones, and Hip Route. Artists of integrity who share the true philosophy of the troubadour and offer promoters and proprietors a stable of artists of proven quality and reliability.
Pete Christie is passionate about his handmade guitars and the quality of sound he produces, and is proud to be a “Featured Artist” for Avalon Guitars.
Paul Liddell is a working musician/singer/songwriter/recording artist based by the sea in the North East of England. His current album, the excellent ‘Milestones And Motorways’ is a proudly home-made and independent release.
Paul is an experienced live performer with an unstoppable work ethic, clocking up on average 20 gigs a month both solo and with his band ‘Delphians’. Live, his singularly unique voice and unpretentious delivery combine with the use of live sampling, guitar percussion and layered vocal harmonies to provide a great platform for his wonderful songs to shine. Paul has toured in America, whipping up a storm in several little coffee houses across California. While there he performed on a TV show filmed in Time Warner studios in Hollywood, and got his song ‘Brighter Lights’ placed on a nationally distributed and TV advertised folk compilation CD.

Lincoln’s new album “The Shovel vs. The Howling Bones” produced by his mentor and legendry artist/producers Ray Wylie Hubbard & George Reiff, has received star reviews and an immense amount of radio and press coverage.
At the Age of 10, Lincoln had become an accomplished fiddle player and won the Texas State Youth Fiddle Championship before quickly progressing onto blues slide guitar and having found his distinctive voice he was spotted by Ray Wylie Hubbard.
Lincoln Durham’s passion seems to know no bounds. He has intelligent lyrics, strong musicianship and a seriously infectious vocal style that slays audiences.

“The word is out about Emily Saunders…musicality, poise and ingenuity… Saunders is the real deal… a jazz vocalist with a big future… ” (4 stars) The Guardian, John Fordham
“Lovely” Clive Anderson, BBC Radio4
Marked as one to look out for in 2012 by Jazzwise magazine Emily brings her UK Tour to Farncombe Cavern playing dark, sultry ballads and exuberant, hip swaying grooves from her new cd.
Part of her UK tour Emily will be performing music from her new cd, along with favourites from her debut ‘Cotton Skies’.
“Emily Saunders is a very classy improvisational act on 21st century Latin-jazz – Peyroux meets Parlato, with a lot of personal quirks thrown in” John Fordham.
Widely commented as one of the most unique, unusual yet refreshing voices in jazz today, reflecting her passion for Brazilian rhythms and some of the great composers that have inspired her, she uses her voice to create a distinctive, instrumental approach to the music. Yet it is not only Saunders’ masterful voice, but her talent as a songwriter and arranger that sets her above the rest.
The coolness of her poetic, alluring, compositions and dreamy lyrics are balanced with an outstanding selection of fiery arrangements by composers Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti and Airto Moreira. Saunders’ dark, sultry ballads are offset by exuberant, hip swaying grooves. She combines and arranges for voice, horns and rhythm creating a fascinating and unusual sound.
”Saunders’ debut album, Cotton Skies, moves like a belt of high pressure to give us a subtropical Indian summer, with limpid Brazilian rhythms, breathy vocals and fine melodies.” The Independent
“Well worth hearing and definitely a find” Jazzwise, Stephen Graham

Phil Bates & Tina McBain have a bit of a history together; way back they played together as a duo, playing all over the country and in 1998 the very successful and critically acclaimed Eleanor Rigby Experience which was a full band project reworking the material of Lennon & McCartney (and a bit of Harrison) came into being.
The ERE lineup was pretty impressive and featured original Jethro Tull drummer, Clive Bunker, ex member of Fairport and Jethro Tull member Maartin Allcock, Late Night Band guitarist Andy Bole along side Phil and Tina.
Their most recent project along with original ELO, ELO2 and now The Orchestra member Mik Kaminski, is The Beatles, Blues & Blue Violin Project, which has completed 10 UK tours, but due to Mik’s commitment with The Orchestra (ELO pt2) will be finishing in April 2012.
The Eclectic Collection Project is something Phil and Tina have been thinking about for some time. There are many, many songs that both of them love, but haven’t ever performed. This project is specifically put together so that they can explore the vast array of classic songs that have been sitting in the backs of their heads for years. There will be reworkings of some great material, all given the fantastic Bates treatment, which so many people appreciate.
Tina is particularly excited about this new project because she can, as Phil says, sing some of her very favourite songs, and talk for hours about them. (She says she doesnt say a lot – yeah right!)
There will be all sorts of genres, from folk, through blues and into country and rock. It’s again, exactly what it says on the tin – Eclectic!
We look forward to seeing you at the show.
